Research Project: Validation, Fine Mapping, Marker Assisted Selection, and Accelerated Breeding for Scab Resistance in Soft Red Winter Wheat

Location:

Project Number: 500-53-002-22
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Jun 17, 2004
End Date: Jun 16, 2005

Objective:
Validate three FHB QTLs on 2BS, 3BS and 5 AL previously identified in a Chinese line W14. Accelerate development of adapted commercially viable scab SRW varieties.

Approach:
Investigate a total of 330 plants including parents for Type II resistance in greenhouse and for resistance to FHB in a replicated field test. Determine differences among these NILs for FHB resistance via analysis of disease severity in both field and greenhouse tests. Evaluate a total of 790 plants including parents for Type II resistance in the greenhouse and characterize for the six SRR loci in three targeted regions. Determine differences in direct contribution to resistance and interactions of these marker loci. Use replicated disease assessment tests to evaluate 170 SRW wheat genotypes. Evaluate nineteen scab-resistant wheat lines selected from last year's observation yield tests in replicated preliminary yield trials at three locations in Virginia.
