Research Project: Breeding & Development of DNA Markers for Fusarium Head Blight Resistance in Wheat

Location:

Project Number: 500-53-001-01
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Jun 23, 1999
End Date: Jun 22, 2004

Objective:
1) Develop Fusarium head blight resistant wheat varieties adapted for commercial production in Minnesota; 2) Investigate breeding strategies to more efficiently develop regionally adapted, FHB resistant wheat germplasm; 3) Map additional markers on chromosomes 3BS and 2AL to resolve the QTL into a region of <5 cM; and 4) Develop PCR Markers that are suitable for use in marker-assisted selection.

Approach:
Crosses will be made between FHB resistance sources and regionally adapted germplasm. Field and greenhouse screening of materials will be used to characterize levels of FHB resistance. Approximately 1,000 lines that are candidates for entry into preliminary yield trials will be tested once for FHB resistance under greenhouse conditions.
