Research Project: Improvement of Soft Red Winter Wheat for Resistance to Fusarium Head Blight

Location:

Project Number: 500-53-001-35
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Jun 22, 1999
End Date: Jun 21, 2004

Objective:
Develop FHB resistant and low FHB incidence wheat cultivars that are adapted throughout Indiana; determine allelism/linkage of FHB resistance genes of several wheat resistance source lines; determine inheritance of FHB low incidence.

Approach:
Wheat lines and populations will be evaluated in greenhouse and field nurseries. Populations of genetic analyses for type II resistance will be tested primarily floret near the tip of spikes on the day of flowering. Populations and lines for breeding will primarily be tested in the field, but selected families will be test in the greenhouse, as space and facilities permit. Head row and small plot nurseries as well as one replication of most yield nurseries will be seeded in disced corn stalks to maximize inoculum supply.
