Research Project: Hyperspectral Imaging Technology for Surface Contaminant Identification

Location: Poultry Processing and Meat Quality Research

Project Number: 6612-42000-034-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jul 22, 1999
End Date: Jul 21, 2004

Objective:
To determine spectral sensitivity, dynamic range, signal noise, wavelength accuracy, spatial resolution, and optimum spectral and spatial binning of a near infrared hyperspectral imaging system. To utilize the system to evaluate the feasibility of detecting contaminants on poultry carcasses and poultry products in the near infrared region (900 to 1700 nm).

Approach:
A near infrared hyperspectral imaging system will be developed to detect contaminants on poultry carcasses and other poultry products. The imaging system will be calibrated and characterized for wavelength accuracy and spectral response. The imaging system will then be used to evaluate contaminants on poultry carcasses to determine if there are suitable wavelengths between 900 and 1700 nm in the near infrared region that could be used to identify fecal and other contaminants. If new wavelengths are found that improve the detection accuracy, then a new common aperture camera system, which was previously developed by ARS, will be modified and tested for real-time on-line contaminant detection.
