Research Project: Microbial Antagonists and Lysing Phages for Control of Campylobacter in Broilers

Location: Poultry Microbiological Safety Research

Project Number: 6612-32000-034-09
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Feb 01, 2003
End Date: Mar 20, 2005

Objective:
Create a defined set of anti-Campylobacter enteric bacteria and Campylobacter lysing phage, in a shelf-stable formulation. Use of this preparation(s) should provide reduced colonization of Campylobacter in poultry.

Approach:
Identify optimum combinations of bacteria and phage needed to control Campylobacter colonization in chickens. Apply practical and economical approachs to expand and preserve the combination of organisms. Provide ARS with adequate materials to conduct floor pen experiments to confirm the control of Campylobacter colonization in chickens.
