Research Project:
COLLABORATIVE LINKAGES WITH USDA-ANIMAL RESEARCH SERVICES
Location:
Project Number: 210-22310-002-16
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Sep 30, 2000
End Date: Sep 30, 2005
Objective:
The objective of this effort is to support mutually beneficial cooperative research and scientific exchanges between ARS and the International Livestock Institute in areas of animal health and production.
Approach:
Identify and co-implement mutually beneficial cooperative research and exchanges of scientists for short and longterm visits: Development of diagnostic tests with ARS-ADRU, Pullman, Washington, Dr. Don Knowles. The purpose of this project is to convert the existing diagnostic reagents for Babesia bovis, already developed at Pullman, into a format that is compatible with the ILRI ELISA tests and to evaluate the test against a defined serum bank maintained at ILRI. This serum bank consists of defined experimental serum samples and samples from different countries with defined epidemiological situations. A number of recombinant B. bovis antigens are available at Pullman. These will be evaluated against the ILRI serum bank. The gene encoding a suitable antigen will be expressed using the pGEX expression system to conform to the ILRI diagnostic antigen constructs. The new recombinant antigen will be used to determine the specificity and sensitivity of antibody detection and then validated in extended studies.
