Research Project:
Characterization of the Genetic Diversity in Apomictic Grasses Using Molecular Markers
Location:
Crop Germplasm Research
Project Number: 6202-21000-020-02
Project Type:
Specific C/A
Start Date: Sep 01, 2002
End Date: Aug 31, 2007
Objective:
Characterize the genetic diversity of apomictic germplasm collected from different geographical areas to better understand the relatedness of indivudals within agamic complexes and to determine the comparative genome relations with other important grass species.
Approach:
Germplasm of different warm-season grasses (buffelgrass, Florida paspalum, brown seeded paspalum, etc.) that was collected in their native habitats will be analyzed. Molecular markers (AFLPs) will be used to assess the genetic diversity within each species. Additional markers (SSRs) will be developed and used to complement the AFLP findings. These data will be used to construct phylogenetic trees to determine how the accessions separate into different groups. An understanding of these relationships will be beneficial in selecting germplasm to use in breeding improved cultivars.
