Research Project: Development of Integrated Livestock and Forage Production Systems

Location: Forage and Livestock Production Unit

Project Number: 6218-31630-004-02
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Feb 01, 2000
End Date: Jan 31, 2005

Objective:
To develop more efficient forage and livestock production systems by incorporation of new forage and animal resources and by combining traditional genetic resources in new ways.

Approach:
Hybrids will be developed for the production of superior cool-season grasses. Interspecific hybridization will be used to exploit the genetic diversity of the Triticeae tribe and to generate new Triticum-Agropyron hybrids for evaluation as new forage resources. Traditional selection genetics will be used to develop more environmentally adapted stocker calves and lambs to increase animal productivity in forage-livestock systems. The grain component of the winter wheat/livestock system will be evaluated under different livestock grazing strategies to determine the effect of grazing on the grain component of this unique system. Traditional forage and animal resources will be combined in unique systems to evaluate the economical efficiencies.
