The Library announces the appointment of two new members of the NLM Board of Regents and the director of the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications

New Regents

The Library's Board of Regents welcomes two new members: Michele S. Klein, AHIP, Manager of Library Services at Children's Hospital of Michigan, Detroit, and Jordan J. Baruch, Sc.D., President of Jordan Baruch Associates, Washington, DC, a consulting firm to industry and governments on the planning, management, and integration of strategy and technology. Ms. Klein will bring to the Board a special interest in how NLM can assist hospital and medical librarians who provide information to health care professionals and patients on a local, institutional level. Dr. Baruch, a former Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Science and Technology (1977-81), has wide experience in the areas of business administration, electrical engineering and international development.

The NLM Board of Regents advises, consults with, and makes recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Director, NLM, on matters related to the activities and policies of the Library. Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Chancellor Emeritus and Distinguished Service Professor, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, chairs the Board.


Lister Hill Center Director

Dr. Alexa McCray Alexa T. McCray, Ph.D., has been named Director of the Library's Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communication. The Lister Hill Center, which supports and conducts research and development in health science communication, consists of 4 branches and the Office of High Performance Computing and Communications. The Center has a staff of 75 and receives advice from an appointed Board of Scientific Counselors. Dr. McCray is a recognized expert in the field of informatics and in the development of communications technologies to improve access to biomedical information by health care professionals. Dr. McCray has been with the Lister Hill Center since 1986, and was previously Chief of the Center's Cognitive Science Branch. Prior to her NLM service, Dr. McCray worked as a Research Affiliate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University, and as a Research Staff Member at the Computer Sciences Department of IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
