This series of 12 web-based modules are provided by the Canadian Council
of Animal Care (CCAC) and cover topics such as environmental enrichment,
pain and distress, occupational health and safety, and the 3Rs. Each
module can be viewed on the web or printed in .PDF format.
- Care, Handling and Use
of Aquatic Animals
-
Provided by The Canadian Aquaculture
Institute. This is an institutional animal user training program,
specializing in aquatic animals and is in accordance to the Canadian
Council on Animal Care's National Institutional Animal User Training
program syllabus. In the near future, they will also be offering The
Experimental Fish - an Online Aquatic Animal User Training Program (see
http://www.upei.ca/cai/onlinecourses.html for more information.

International Council for Laboratory Animal Science (ICLAS) Courses
-
Jackson Laboratory Courses and Conferences
-
The Laboratory's focus is on the development and use of mouse genetic models
to study biological processes in humans. The courses in genetic research and
resources serve to train new and established scientists how to use
mouse genetics as a tool to understand basic mammalian biology and
disease.
- Laboratory Animal Welfare Training
Exchange
- A membership site for trainers, training coordinators, and
IACUC administrators. Includes meeting proceedings and listserv. Hosted
by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
-
Meeting the Information Requirements of the Animal Welfare Act
-
The Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, National Agricultural Library (NAL) offers a one and a half day
workshop for individuals who are responsible for providing information to
meet the requirements of the Animal Welfare Act.
- Teaching Lab
Animal Techniques (Norwegian Reference Centre for Laboratory Animal
Science & Alternatives)
- Contains links to resources on
bleeding and intravenous techniques, animal research techniques, online
training programs, experimental design and techniques and other laboratory
animal training materials.
-
Working with Laboratory Animals Web-Based Training Courses
-
Developed by the Veteran's Administration Medical Research Service,
Office for Research and Development, to assist institutions in the training
of staff who use laboratory animals in biomedical research.

Comfortable Quarters for Laboratory Animals, 9th edition, 2002.
Collection of essays on housing conditions for
laboratory animals. Edited by Viktor & Annie Reinhardt.
-
Comparative Placentation Website
Comprehensive website on animal placentas created
by Kurt Benirschke to assist with the examination and evaluation of mammalian
placentas. Primarily directed to veterinary pathologists and zoo veterinarians.
Regularly updated.
- Enrichment
Online
Provided by The Fort Worth Zoo, in conjunction with
the American Institute of Biological Sciences for use in zoo as well as
laboratory settings. The key component of the site is a search engine for
taxa-specific enrichment ideas. In addition to accommodating detailed
searches for enrichment ideas, the database is interactive and allows
users to input their own ideas and to also provide comments on items
already in the database.

Fact Sheets - USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
All fact sheets are available in both text and PDF
formats.
- The Laboratory Rat: A Natural
History (Film)
Shot as a wildlife documentary
over several months, this 27 min film follows the lives of domestic rats
after being released in a large outdoor enclosure where they have to
compete, like their wild cousins, for food, shelter and mates. The film
demonstrates how studies ranging from physiology to psychology have
uncovered a number of features which, despite generations of
domestification, remain ready to be expressed when given the opportunity.
Written and produced by Manuel Berdoy, 2002.
- Mouse Genome Informatics
(MGI)
Provides integrated access to
informationn on the genetics and biology of the laboratory mouse.
-
National Center for Research Resources (NCRR)
On-line NCRR directories which identify research resource facilities
(including NMR imaging and spectroscopy research centers),
biomaterials, and models available to biomedical investigators.
- National Toxicology Program (NTP)
Established in 1978 by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to
coordinate toxicology research and testing activities within the Department,
to provide information about potentially toxic chemicals to regulatory and
research agencies and the public, and to strengthen the science base in
toxicology.

lists, newsgroups, and publications.
-
Pain & Distress Report - The Humane Society of the United States
Newsletter for IACUCs and others in the field of laboratory animal science
with up-to-date information on issues regarding pain and distress
in laboratory animals.
-
Refinement and Environmental Enrichment for All Laboratory Animals
This information resource is a merger of the two databases on refinement &
enrichment for
non-primate and primate
laboratory animals. It disseminates reference material on all aspects of
refinement of housing and handling conditions and environmental enrichment
for ALL animals kept in research, testing and teaching institutions. This
database comprises published articles, abstracts, book chapters, books,
photos, and videotapes. Entries have been read/screened and annotated by
the authors to guarantee their relevance to the topic.

The Zebrafish Information Network (ZFIN)
“ZFIN serves as the zebrafish model organism database. The long term goal
for ZFIN are a) to be the community database resource for the laboratory use
of zebrafish, b) to develop and support integrated zebrafish genetic, genomic
and developmental information, c) to maintain the definitive reference data
sets of zebrafish research information, d) to link this information extensively
to corresponding data in other model organism and human databases, e) to
facilitate the use of zebrafish as a model for human biology and f) to serve
the needs of the research community."
