NIH Roadmap Initiative

The NIH Roadmap is a series of progressive initiatives that seek to transform biomedical research and accelerate its discoveries.

Starting the summer of 2002, Roadmap Working Groups, involving over 300 experts, proposed Roadmap Initiatives and Plans, some of which were chosen for implementation in the fall of 2004. The initiatives chosen target major opportunities and gaps in biomedical research that no single institute could tackle alone but that the agency as a whole must address. All institutes, including NIMH, are involved in this endeavor.

NIMH staff and scientists have participated in the development of the NIH Roadmap and are also contributing to its implementation. Dr. Mayada Akil is the NIMH liaison to NIH Roadmap and is coordinating Roadmap activities for the Institute. To contact Dr. Akil, please send an e-mail to makil@mail.nih.gov.

Regional Translational Research Centers

One of the major thrusts of the NIH Roadmap is to encourage an interdisciplinary approach to biomedical research that is more likely to lead to the translation of basic research into clinically relevant discoveries.

This initiative solicits planning grants submitted by self-assembled groups of institutions to conceptualize and design Regional Translational Research Centers (RTRCs) to foster more efficient and robust translational research. Once operational, RTRCs will provide a broad menu of clinical research expertise, services, and core technologies to multiple institutions within a region. The goal: to enhance the bi-directional bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-bench communication that characterizes translational research.

Application Receipt Dates(s) is January 19, 2005. An informational pre-application meeting described in this RFA will take place in Conference Room 989, 6701 Democracy Boulevard, Bethesda, MD, on November 10, 2004, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
