The Division of Research Coordination, Planning and Translation (DRCPT) was established in April 2003. The DRCPT works to ensure that NIEHS research is provided to and easily accessed by professionals and communities to improve public health. In addition, the division seeks ways to measure and demonstrate the effectiveness of NIEHS prevention and intervention strategies on improving the health of the American people.
The DRCPT is headed by Allen Dearry. Dr. Dearry says that he plans on promoting more collaboration among different disciplines, which will enhance the pace of scientific progress. Within the Institute, he intends to better integrate planning and budget processes throughout the divisions to increase coordination and effectiveness. (See NIH Record Article, for more information)
DRCPT achieves its mandate through:
- Overall guidance, planning, and evaluation for NIEHS research and training programs related to environmental exposures and their impact on individual and population health.
- Coordination of intramural, extramural, and interagency activities to achieve optimal research productivity.
- Publication of Environmental Health Perspectives, the nation's leading journal for conveying current results in the field of environmental health research to scientific and lay audiences.
- Communication and information activities, within and beyond the Institute, to ensure that NIEHS findings effectively reach internal, public, and professional audiences and that all facets of the American public can participate in developing NIEHS research priorities.
- Management of strategic information resources and services that maximize research in environmental health.
- Translational efforts to extend NIEHS research results into information, resources, and tools that can be used by public health and medical professionals and by the public to improve overall health and well-being, especially in vulnerable populations.
