  Hurricane Fran - September 4, 1996: Hurricane Fran as she approached the US coast on September 4, 1996. This 3D view looking north was made from satellite imagery collected from the NOAA-14 polar-orbiting meteorological satellite and processed at the USGS Center for Coastal Geology. The sensor which captured this image is the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). Florida is on the left side and the Carolinas are to the upper left.

1996 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Thirteen named storms, including nine hurricanes, formed in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico in 1996. Four storms, including Hurricanes Bertha and Fran, made landfall in the U.S.
