deadline for the AGA Centocor International Fellowship in Gastrointestinal
Inflammation and Immunology extended to January 14, 2005: This award provides
$50,000 to enable promising young investigators from outside the United
States to spend a year at a U.S. institution engaged full-time in research

Studies
Address Heavily-Debated Issues Surrounding Virtual Colonoscopy
Two studies
published in the journal Gastroenterology show that widespread use
of virtual colonoscopy will ultimately decrease demand for traditional
colonoscopy and increase colorectal cancer screening rates, and “prepless” virtual
colonoscopy is as effective as the traditional method of colorectal

Procedure to Treat GERD in Children Found to be Ineffective
According
to a study published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and
Hepatology, more than 60 percent of the children who received surgical
fundoplication to control GERD had recurring symptoms of the disease
months following surgery. The procedure is the third most common major

Four awards of $50,000 each, $25,000 from the AGA and $25,000 in matching funds
from the applicants national GI society, will be awarded to non-US citizen young
investigators to spend one-year performing GI-related research at an American
