Dr. Majumdar is currently a Professor and the Vice
Chair of the Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University
of California, Berkeley, where he has been a faculty
member since 1996. He received his Bachelors in Mechanical
Engineering in 1985 from the Indian Institute of Technology,
Bombay. He completed his M.S. and PhD in Mechanical
Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1987 and 1989, respectively,
after which he has been a faculty member at Arizona
State University (1989-92) and UC Santa Barbara (1992-96).
His research interests span many topics in micro/nanoscale
science and engineering, including phonon and electron
transport in low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures;
microscale energy conversion devices; scanning probe
microscopy and nanoscale instrumentation; and biomolecular
nanomechanics and microarray chips for protein and
nucleic acid analysis. He is a recipient of the NSF
Young Investigator Award, the Melville Medal from
the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
as well as the ASME Gustus Larson Memorial Award for
outstanding achievements. Prof. Majumdar is serving
as the Chair of the Advisory Board of the ASME Nanotechnology
Institute. He also serves on the DOE Council for Energy
Engineering Research (CEER). He is currently the editor
of Microscale Thermophysical Engineering and an associate
editor of the Int. J. Heat & Mass Transfer and the
ASME J. Heat Transfer.
