DOE/EPA Announce Fuel Economy Leaders for Model Year 2004

WASHINGTON, DC-- Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham today unveiled the newest edition of the web-based Fuel Economy Guide.   The new and improved web site, www.fueleconomy.gov, developed cooperatively by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, features fuel economy, emissions, and safety data for model year 2004 vehicles, as well as fuel-saving tips for drivers who are looking to go the extra mile.

“Drivers who purchase fuel efficient and alternative fuel vehicles are doing their part to protect the environment, conserve resources and reduce our dependence on imported oil,” Secretary Abraham said.

“Well-informed consumers are key to energy conservation and environmental protection,” said Acting EPA Administrator Marianne Horinko. “With this fuel economy information, Americans can choose the vehicle that’s right for them with a good understanding of its environmental impact, its fuel consumption, and its costs.”

Fuel-efficient, advanced technologies play prominently in the new vehicle guide, as the three commercially available hybrid-electric vehicles Bthat use a smaller gasoline engine and self-charging electric motor/generator Bwere rated best in their classes in fuel efficiency.  Also for the second year, a special section featuring fuel cell vehicles highlights what’s coming down the road.

Printed copies of the guide will be available later this fall at new car dealerships, public libraries, and credit unions nationwide.  View the 2004 fuel economy leaders by class.
