As part of its effort to help with the national influenza vaccine shortage, the Department of Defense will replace part of its ordered supply of standard vaccine with one that is administered nasally. DoD agreed to review the use of FluMist, the live attenuated influenza vaccine for this influenza season at the request of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Health and Human Services has been aggressively seeking ways to increase the availability of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine for the medically high-risk population of the United States. To assist that effort, DoD will purchase an additional 200,000 doses of FluMist. This will free-up 200,000 doses of this year's vaccine for HHS to purchase for medically high-risk Americans, without impacting DoD's ability to protect its forces. Assistant Secretary of Defense William Winkenwerder quickly sent a
letter to the Service surgeons general explaining this action.
