Science Ambassador Program

Science Ambassador Lesson Plans

Science lesson plans developed through the Science Ambassador Program will bring current and relevant science topics into the classroom. The lesson plans will not only meet National Science Standards, but also challenge students to think about science in a new way. Public health topics like birth defects, developmental disabilities, and disability and health offer students the chance to apply science in the real world. Students will begin to see science, and its relationship to public health, as a dynamic and exciting area of study.

As part of the Science Ambassador Program, participants will develop science lesson plans for middle and high school students. These lesson plans will be based on different workshop sessions led by National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) scientists. Lesson plans will go through a rigorous review process by NCBDDD scientists for accuracy of scientific content and by GLC experts for adherence to education standards and principles. This process will ensure the development of quality and effective lesson plans. All lesson plans must meet National Science Education Standards. Upcoming lesson plans will focus on epidemiology, folic acid and birth defects, surveillance, genetics, and fetal alcohol syndrome.

Teachers from around the United States can use these lesson plans in their science classrooms. These lesson plans are based on information from CDC and can be accessed by clicking on Standards Aligned Lesson Plans & Activities at http://www.glc.k12.ga.us/gei/NCBDDD/homepg.htm.
