Research Project: Evaluation of Resistance in Corn to the European Corn Borer and the Black Cutworm

Location: Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research

Project Number: 3625-22000-015-03
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jun 19, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2005

Objective:
Evaluate germplasm for resistance/tolerance to feeding by the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, and the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon.

Approach:
Insects will be produced in the laboratory using published methodologies. At the appropriate plant phylogeny, insects will be placed in the whorl of the plant or behind the leaf-sheath collar (European corn borer) or on the soil surface near the base of V2-V4 stage plants (black cutworm).
