Research Project: Evaluation of Beta Germplasm for Resistance to Sugar Beet Cyst Nematode

Location: Sugarbeet Research

Project Number: 5402-21220-006-03
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Jul 06, 2004
End Date: May 14, 2009

Objective:
Screen exotic Beta germplasm from the USDA-ARS Beta collection for resistance to the SBCN and incorporate the resistance genes using traditional plant breeding technology into agronomically acceptable sugar beet germplasm populations. Additionally to further evaluate ARS-developed advanced sugar beet breeding populations derived from the introgression of exotic germplasms for reaction to the sugar beet nematode. Additionally these populations will be used to study the inheritance and genetic basis of resistance to the SBCN

Approach:
Evaluation for SBCN resistance through growth chamber and greenhouse studies conducted under environmentally controlled plant growth parameters optimum for H. schachtii penetration and reproduction. The time required for each evaluation is approximately four to five months with three part-time microscopists. Seed of exotic Beta germplasm and of sugar beet populations derived from exotic germplasm will be evaluated in the growth chamber in Laramie to determine reproductive rates for the SBCN and selections for resistance will be made. Selections of plants with a high level of resistance (low reproductive rate) will be made. These selections will be planted in the USDA-ARS Fort Collins breeding nursery for crossing and further agronomic evaluation. More advanced germplasm will be tested in fields know to have high naturally occurring populations of the SBCN.
