The Genetic Basis of Cancer - Module 1, Science: How Cancer is Genetic
Course No: CB3056
This CD-ROM presents in two modules the scientific concepts that explain the genetic basis for cancer, using breast and colon cancer as examples, and the key issues in patient care including risk assessment, genetic testing, and follow-up care. This course, CB3056, is the scientific module which begins with a genetics refresher, followed by a section on malignant transformation that describes the series of mutations which accumulate to transform a normal somatic cell into a cancer cell. It also contains information on hereditary and sporadic cancers comparing and contrasting the two types and other information showing how genes and the environment interact to increase the risk for cancer. Finally, breast cancer and colon cancer are presented as models for these concepts. MATERIALS: CD-ROM containing two modules; each module is accredited separately. Materials may be purchased from Oxford University Press at 1-800-451-7556.
