2003-2004

The International School of Kenya is a private, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 13 as well as the International Baccalaureate program for students of all nationalities.  The school was jointly purchased by the U.S. and Canadian governments in 1976.  The school year consists of 2 semesters extending from August to December and from January to June.

Organization:  The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Governors and a 9-member Board of Directors.  Three members of the Board of Directors are appointed and 6 members are elected by parents of children enrolled in the school.  All 7 members of the Board of Governors are appointed.  Four members represent the U.S. Embassy and 3 members represent the Canadian High Commission.

Curriculum:  The curriculum is basically North American and meets the requirements for entry in U.S. colleges and universities.  The program is supplemented by the International Baccalaureate, which includes a full program of advanced courses.  The school testing program includes the College Board tests (PSAT and SAT) and Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills.  Instruction is in English.  French, Spanish, and Swahili are offered as foreign languages.  The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools accredit the school.

Faculty:  In the 2003-2004 school year, there are 75 faculty members.

Enrollment:  At the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year, enrollment was 568 (PK-grade 5: 204; grades 6-8: 127; and grades 9-12: 237).

Facilities:  The School is located in a rural area on 49 acres of property approximately 8 miles from Nairobi's city center.  Considerable construction and renovation has taken place since 1976.  Facilities now include an art and technology complex, a 500-seat theatre, a Kdg.-grade 13 media center with video and research centers, a gym, 3 computer laboratories, science laboratories, a student center, a kindergarten complex (expanded in 2000), a solar-heated swimming pool, 3 tennis courts, extensive playing fields, and classrooms.  A multi-sports court was constructed in 2001 to accommodate outdoor activities.

Finances:  In the 2003-2004 school year, about 90 percent of the School's income derives from tuition.  Annual tuition rates, payable in U.S. dollars or other convertible currency, are as follows: PK: $4,000; Kdg.-grade 2: $10,990; grades 3-5: $11,050; grades 6-8: $13,050 and grades 6-12: $13,125.  Bus fees are $900.  There is a one-time registration fee for new students of $3,000.  (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
