Rotavirus Vaccine (RotaShield®) and Intussusception

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted on October 22, 1999 to no longer recommend use of the RotaShield® vaccine for infants because of an association between the vaccine and intussusception.  Article in the November 1999 MMWR

CDC published "Suspension of Rotavirus Vaccine After Reports of
Intussusception--United States, 1999
" in the September 3, 2004 issue of  Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).
An October 1999 announcement showing that Wyeth-Lederle Vaccines voluntarily withdrew its RotaShield® vaccine from the market and requested the immediate return of all doses of the vaccine.
