Research Project: Evaluation of Salmonella and Campylobacter Recovery Incidence in Commercial Turkeys

Location: Food and Feed Safety Research

Project Number: 6202-32000-015-07
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Aug 15, 2000
End Date: Aug 14, 2005

Objective:
1) To determine the recovery incidence of Salmonella and Campylobacter on commercial turkey farms in three geographical locations, 2) to establish a working relationship with the National Turkey Federation and turkey industry, and 3) to identify prospective commercial turkey companies to perform competitive exclusion studies.

Approach:
Flocks will be assessed for Salmonella and Campylobacter status at market age in commercial processing plants located in at least three geographical locations. Carcasses will be removed from processing lines immediately prior to chill immersion and subjected to microbiological analysis for Salmonella and Campylobacter at each processing plant. The data collected in the processing plants will represent the overall microbiological status of each complex with regard to Salmonella and Campylobacter.
