Carolyn Kilpatrick
Michigan, 13th

“The Air Force Academy Office of Victim Advocate is a much needed tool that will assist those who have suffered from acts of violence. Sexual violence associated with the U.S. Armed Forces has gained public attention in such scandals as Tailhook, Aberdeen, and Fort Leonard Wood. I am happy to have sponsored the appropriation to fund the Office of Victim Advocate.”

Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-MI) -- mother, grandmother, and former high school teacher -- is a champion for the welfare of America’s children. Rep. Kilpatrick entered the political arena to help build a better world for our children. After teaching in the Detroit Public Schools, Rep. Kilpatrick won a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives and served in the State House for 18 years.

Rep. Kilpatrick was nominated to the prestigious Air Force Academy Board by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. House Speaker Hastert appointed Rep. Kilpatrick to the Board in 2003. As a member of the Air Force Academy Board, she has received first hand information regarding sexual violence against female soldiers and a lack of support for women in the military. Rep. Kilpatrick introduced legislation to assist female soldiers who have become victims of violence, including sexual assault, and championed the Office of Victim Advocate within the Armed Services.

Rep. Kilpatrick is completing her fourth term serving Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. She has earned the confidence and respect of her peers who have appointed her to the powerful House Appropriations Committee. She is the only Michigan Democrat on this important committee. The Congresswoman serves on the Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury and Independent Agencies; and also serves on the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations. The Congresswoman plays an integral role in determining funding for our national transportation system including highways, transit and the National Transportation Safety Board. The Congresswoman also assists in determining funding for the US Peace Corps, the Agency for International Development, and the United Nation’s Children’s Fund/UNICEF.
