ATSDR Report to Congress - Tar Creek Superfund Site

On Nov. 17, ATSDR and EPA will hold a joint meeting from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to discuss ATSDR's public health assessment for the DuPont DeLisle Titanium Dioxide Site in Pass Christian, Miss. The meeting will be held at DeLisle Elementary School, 6303 W. Wittman Road in Pass Christian.

The public health assessment for public comment on the Ward Transformer Site in Raleigh, N.C., has been issued by ATSDR. The health assessment states that exposure to site-related contaminants in fish or soil could increase the risk of harmful health effects. Written comments to the health assessment will be accepted through Dec. 27, 2004.

ATSDR has issued its public health consultation for the Western Minerals Products Plant in Omaha, Neb. ATSDR finds that people who worked at the site from the 1940s to 1989 were exposed to asbestos at levels exceeding workplace health standards.

ATSDR has released for public review and comment its public health consultation for the DuPont DeLisle Titanium Dioxide Plant in Pass Christian, Miss. The consultation finds that past and current exposures to dioxin-like compounds would not cause harmful health effects to residents near the site.

A public health consultation on past air emissions from Kelly AFB in San Antonio, Texas, has been issued by ATSDR for public comment. The comment period extends through Nov. 30, 2004.

ATSDR released the ATSDR ToxProfiles 2004™ and accompanying ToxFAQs™ CD-ROM, featuring updated toxicologic and epidemiologic information, interaction between chemical mixtures, and chemical-specific fact sheets.

ATSDR has issued the final public health assessment for the Volunteer Army Ammunition Plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. The report finds that residents near the plant are not currently being exposed to contaminants at levels expected to cause harmful health effects.

ATSDR has issued for public review and comment a public health assessment on the Naval Air Station Brunswick in Brunswick, Maine. The report finds no harmful exposures to site-related contamination are associated with groundwater and drinking water, surface water, or indoor air.

ATSDR begins offering a medical evaluation Oct. 5, 2004, to former workers of the Stauffer Chemical Co. in Tarpon Springs, Fla. The medical evaluation will be done at Occupational Health Service of Helen Ellis Clinic, 2280 U.S. Highway 19, Holiday, Fla.

The final version of a public health consultation on the Amoco Oil Co., site in Sugar Creek, Mo., has been issued by ATSDR. ATSDR concluded that exposure to on-site surface water and sediment is not expected to cause harmful health effects for workers or trespassers. ATSDR also concluded that intermittent exposures to off-site surface water and sediment are not a public health threat to residents living in Sugar Creek.

On Oct. 12, ATSDR will hold a community meeting from 6:00-8:00 p.m. to discuss findings from air testing and the need for additional testing near the William C. Meredith Wood Treatment facility in East Point, Ga. The meeting will be held at the East Point Auditorium, 2727 Main St. (behind City Hall) in East Point, Ga.

The final version of the public health assessment on the Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Cheatham Annex, in Williamsburg, Va., says exposure to on-base contaminants by on-base residents and visitors and neighboring community residents are not at levels that could cause adverse health effects.

The final version of the public health consultation on the Empire Sanitary Landfill (aka Alliance Landfill), Taylor Borough, Pa., categorizes the site as an indeterminate public health hazard.

On Sept. 28, ATSDR will hold community meetings from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. to discuss its upcoming public health assessment for the LCP Chemicals Georgia site in Brunswick, Ga. The meetings will be held at Arco United Methodist Church, 12 Ross Road in Brunswick, Ga.

The public comment version of the public health assessment on the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site in Golden, Colo., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency finds that past and current exposures to site-related contaminants do not pose a health hazard.

The public comment version of a health consultation for the Sunoco Refinery site in Oregon, Ohio, has been issued by ATSDR. The document will be available for review at the Oregon Branch Library and the East Toledo Family Center through Oct. 5.

ATSDR has issued the final version of its public health assessment on the Marine Corps Combat Development Command site in Quantico, Va. (MCCDC Quantico). The agency categorizes the site as “no apparent public health hazard.”

The final version of a public health assessment on the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Main Site in Livermore, Calif., has been issued by ATSDR. The agency categorizes the site as “no apparent public health hazard.”

ATSDR has released public health consultations and fact sheets for several of the National Asbestos Exposure Review's (NAER) 28 Phase One sites. Public health consultations, fact sheets and media announcements relating to the sites now are available.

ATSDR joined the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to launch the WTC Health Registry, a comprehensive survey of those most directly exposed to the events of 9/11. The 20-year registry will track the physical and mental health of participants and will provide a broad picture of the short-term and long-term health effects of 9/11.

The Progress Report on the Camp Lejeune, N.C., water contamination survey has been released. A follow-on study to review the medical records of 103 cases of specific birth defects and childhood cancers and a water modeling study are planned.
