For more information contact Phil Green, CDC Project Officer, at (404) 498-1717.

In response to requests from members of the public and the Department of Energy, we have begun an Historical Documents Retrieval and Assessment project at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Located in northern New Mexico, operations at the Laboratory started in 1943 to develop and test the world’s first nuclear weapons. The purpose of our project is to locate and review all historical records that may contribute information about past off-site radionuclide and chemical releases from LANL. Our record review will allow us to develop a comprehensive listing and brief characterization of off-site releases. We plan to work with Los Alamos stakeholders to determine if the information we collect warrants an off-site exposure assessment at LANL.

To date, DOE has released approximately 80 boxes of documents identified by CDC researchers. Copies of the documents from about 52 of these boxes have been placed in the University of New Mexico, Zimmerman Library in Albuquerque, NM. The remaining documents will also be placed in the Zimmerman Library as soon as scanning and database entry are completed. Documents are paged from the Government Information Reference Desk and may not be removed from the building. Self and full serve photocopy services are available in the library. Photocopy charges are 10 cents per page. The collection is accessible during the Department’s hours of operation. Email, phone or interlibrary loan delivery requests for these materials are not available. Call (505) 277-5441 for information about the library or click here to review the list of documents.
