David L. Coulter,
MD
President
David Coulter is a child neurologist at Children's Hospital
in Boston and a member of the faculty of the Department of
Neurology at Harvard Medical School. He is the assistant director
of the training program in neurodevelopmental disabilitities
at Children's Hospital and director of neurology for the the
LEND Program at the Institute for Community Inclusion at Children's
Hospital.
Dr. Coulter was a co-author of the 1992 and 2002 editions of
the AAMR definition and classification manuals and has had
a particular interest in the causes of intellectual disability.
He has also published extensively on the treatment of epilepsy
in persons with developmental disabilities and on carnitine
deficiency in epilepsy.
Dr. Coulter is the co-editor of the Journal of Religion, Disability
and Health and has published several articles on the importance
of spirituality in health care for persons with disabilities.
He is interested in research ethics and serves on two Institutional
Review Boards for protection of human subjects in research.
Dr. Coulter received the leadership award from AAMR Region
X in 1995 and received a leadership award from Bethesda Lutheran
Homes and Services in 2003. He represented both AAMR and the
Child Neurology Society at the Surgeon General's Conference
on Health Disparities for Persons with Mental Retardation in
2001 and authored the Community Health Supports model for enhancing
health for persons with intellectual disabilities in 2003.
Dr. Coulter presently serves on the Executive Board of the
American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry and
works with the Developmental Disabilities Quality Coalition
to promote high quality community-based health supports.
