Welcome to our Strategic Planning Homepage

Welcome to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering's (NIBIB) Strategic Planning Web Page. Exciting times lie ahead for this recently established Institute. I am proud to have been appointed the first Director of this new Institute. I accepted this challenge at a time when the research paradigm is changing dramatically. It is in fact this new paradigm, wherein efficacious medical advances are increasingly potentiated by researchers working together at the interface between the life and physical sciences, which led to the creation of the NIBIB. This new environment, combined with visionary predecessors, the rapid pace of technology development, and high-quality investigator-initiated research, has allowed the NIBIB to establish a strong research foundation on which to build. To fully and productively capitalize on this unprecedented opportunity, the NIBIB, in close collaboration with members of our National Advisory Council and with broad public input, is developing of a Strategic Plan that will be reflective of our unique mission. We welcome your input into this process; our intent is to consider the needs and concerns of all of our supporting communities.

A Message from the Director, NIBIB

The mission of the NIBIB is to improve health by leading the development and application of emerging and breakthrough biomedical technologies based in the physical and engineering sciences. These technologies will facilitate an improved fundamental understanding of complex biological processes and facilitate disease detection, treatment, and prevention. To achieve our mission, we will identify compelling scientific opportunities and needs and then encourage scientists to pursue these key areas. This requires maintaining a strong liaison between the Institute, its constituency groups, the research community, and the general public. We are convinced that a successful strategic plan is dependent on a process that involves all stakeholders who are interested in the research programs within our mission. The development of our plan will be a continuous and iterative process, and a draft document will be shared with the community to solicit input and comments at various steps along the way.

Although the NIBIB Strategic Plan will build upon many existing planning processes that we already have in place, we would like the plan to reflect comments from the broadest constituency possible. As such, we invite comments from both individuals and organizations. Some issues on which the NIBIB is seeking broad public input include:

  • Scientific priorities and concerns of the research community, professional and voluntary organizations, patients and their families, and the general public for the future development of NIBIB programs.
  • Emerging trends in science and technological innovations that may have major implications for future research and should be considered in the planning process.
  • New and ongoing multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary collaborations that can be formed to further the NIBIB mission and improve the health of the public.
  • Methods that would facilitate obtaining scientific and public input on an ongoing basis.
  • Approaches for assessing the need for biomedical imaging and bioengineering researchers and for ensuring that new investigators are adequately trained and appropriately recruited.
  • Approaches for enhancing liaisons with Federal agencies, industry, public and private organizations, communities, and investigators that have an interest in biomedical imaging and bioengineering research and research training and career development.
  • Approaches for promoting diversity in NIBIB training and research.
  • Areas of opportunity that are not currently supported by the NIBIB but are relevant to its' mission.

We welcome you to send your input to us using the "comments" section below as we seek input from all of our stakeholders. The NIBIB looks forward to realizing its mission of spearheading the development and application of emerging and breakthrough biomedical technologies that will improve public health.
