This section contains information on (1) currently active research and training opportunities in bioengineering and biomedical imaging, (2) NIH resources and information relevant to the grant application processes, (3) NIH review study section rosters and information, and (4) results of funded projects for NIBIB and BECON program announcements. Additional information on NIH funding opportunities can be obtained from the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts.
The NIBIB supports basic and applied research and research training that improves health by promoting fundamental discoveries, design and development, translation, and assessment of technological capabilities in biomedical imaging and bioengineering. Research projects should be enabled by areas of engineering, the physical sciences, mathematics, and the computational sciences and should result in discoveries that can be translated into applications for specific diseases, disorders, or biological processes. Integrated, multi-disciplinary, and collaborative approaches to addressing biomedical research are encouraged. Proposals can be based on hypothesis-, design-, needs-, development-, or problem-driven research. The NIBIB supports Investigator-Initiated Research Project Grants via a number of mechanisms. Potential applicants for NIBIB or BECON-coordinated grants are strongly encouraged to discuss their proposed projects with the NIBIB Program Advisor or a science representative from a NIH Institute or Center prior to preparing an application. These representatives can provide guidance regarding (1) the suitability of the project to support the mission of the institute, (2) the most appropriate funding mechanism or opportunity for the proposed work, and (3) whether or not the institute encourages submittal. A brief overview of the missions of each of the NIH Institutes and Centers can be found at http://www.nih.gov/icd. A list of NIH technical and financial contacts for bioengineering-related projects is available on the Internet at http://www.becon.nih.gov/becon_contacts.htm. These contacts can also be used to request permission to submit an application with a budget that exceeds $500,000 direct cost in any year. This permission must be obtained prior to submitting the application for review in accordance with NIH Policy NOT-OD-02-004 which was issued on October 16, 2001. |
