Veteran newsman Walter Cronkite began his career as a news writer and editor for Scripps-Howard and United Press. He was a war correspondent for United Press, and, after the war, was bureau manager in Moscow. He became a CBS television correspondent in 1950. Mr. Cronkite anchored and was managing editor of the CBS Evening News until his retirement in 1981. To many viewers, he was known as "the most trusted man in America." After retiring, Mr. Cronkite coproduced Why in the World (1981) for PBS, hosted CBS's Universe (1982), and hosted Dinosaur (1991) for Arts and Entertainment Cable television. His 1996 autobiography, A Reporter's Life, was a bestseller.
