Top Scientists, Engineers Meet to Plan NSF's 50th Anniversary –
Public Invited to Attend

A select group of the nation's top scientists and engineers – called the Public Advisory Committee – will hold the first of three public meetings to plan the 50th anniversary of the National Science Foundation on Thursday and Friday morning, October 15th and 16th. The National Science Foundation, the agency Congress established to promote and advance scientific progress in the United States, turns 50 in the year 2000. The meetings are open and the general public is invited and welcome to attend.

Under the leadership of chair Dr. H. Guyford Stever, the Public Advisory Committee has been invited by NSF Director Rita Colwell and former NSF Director Neal Lane to help plan "NSF50" events. Stever is a former NSF Director (1972-76) and former Assistant to President Gerald Ford for Science and Technology. Dr. Joseph Bordogna, Acting NSF Deputy Director, will open the meeting and provide welcoming remarks. The group is representative of the scientists that NSF has funded since its inception.

Who: NSF's Public Advisory Committee (15 members).
The general public is invited and welcome to attend.
What: Public Advisory Committee meeting to begin planning 50th anniversary of the National Science Foundation.
When: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30pm Thursday, October 15th and 9:00a.m. to 11:00am Friday, October 16th, 1998
Where: National Science Foundation - Board Room (#1235) 4201 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA (Ballston Metro Stop) (Check in at second-floor security desk)
