Brief Method
Summary:

A portion of well-mixed sample is dried at 105^oC. A portion of dry, well-mixed sample is carefully weighed and then ignited at 550^oC. The loss of weight on ignition represents the amount of volatile solids in the sample.

Application:

This method may be used to analyze samples of bottom material. Usually, only the material that will pass a 2-mm sieve is taken for analysis.
