Brief Method
Summary:
Fluoride ion reacts with the red cerous chelate of alizarin complexone which is determined by automated colorimetry.
Scope And
Application:
This automated method determines fluoride in drinking, surface and saline waters; domestic and industrial wastes.
Applicable
Conc Range:
0.05 - 1.5 mg/L
Interferences: Aluminum interference (aluminum forms a complex with fluoride) can be eliminated by treating the sample with 8-hydroxyquinoline (to complex aluminum) and extraction with chloroform. At aluminum levels below 0.2 mg/L, the extraction procedure is not required.
QC Requirements: None.
Sample Handling: No special requirements.
Max Holding Time:
28 days (MCAWW, Table 1).

Relative Cost: Less than $50
