Directions to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO)

Map of Island of Hawai`i. The US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (USGS, HVO) is located within the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, denoted by the green area.

From Hilo to HVO: Take Highway 11 to just beyond the 28-mile marker, then take the left turn lane to the entrance of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. From the Entrance Station, follow Crater Rim Drive (highlighted yellow on bottom map) for two miles to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO).

From Kailua-Kona to HVO: Take Highway 11 for 95 miles to just beyond the 29-mile marker, then turn right to the entrance of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. Service Entrance Station. From the Entrance Station, follow Crater Rim Drive (highlighted yellow on bottom map) for two miles to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO).
