LATHAM ELECTED TO U.S. HOUSE LEADERSHIP TEAM
CONGRESSMAN ELECTED TO REPRESENT
IOWA,
MISSOURI, ILLINOIS REGION
WASHINGTON, DC
–
Iowa Congressman Tom Latham has been
chosen to represent Members of Congress from the
states of Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois on the
Majority Steering Committee. Latham, elected by his
peers Tuesday morning, will represent the majority
party Members during the upcoming 109th
Congress.
“Tom Latham has been a true leader in his service to
Iowans,” said Speaker of the U.S. House, Dennis
Hastert. “I am happy to see his election to our
leadership Steering Committee and know that his work
will help enact our common sense agenda for
America.”
Through his role,
Latham will help to determine each individual
committee assignment for Majority Members of the
U.S. House of Representatives. The election is for
a two-year term.
"I am honored that my
colleagues have chosen me for this important
position,” said Latham. “I
will work to obtain
and maintain the committee assignments vital to
strengthening our tri-state region’s legislative
voice, and reflect the needs and interests of our
Members constituent’s.”
Latham, just elected
to his six term in Congress with a commanding 61% of
the popular vote, made Iowa history on November 2,
2004, when he received the most votes ever cast in
the state for a seat in the U.S. House of
Representatives in a
contested
election with 180,380 votes. Latham’s 2004 vote
total is only second in all of Iowa U.S. House
electoral history to that of former Iowa Congressman
Fred Grandy’s 1992 historic vote total of 196,942
when he ran
unopposed.
He also serves in the
powerful House Appropriations Committee, and as the
Vice-Chairman of the House Agriculture
Appropriations Committee. Through his work on the
Committee Latham has secured hundreds of millions of
dollars in funding for Iowa law enforcement, the
Iowa National Guard, transportation projects,
agriculture, environmental and public education
initiatives, health care, community, economic and
small business development.
