REASON FOR
ALERT : This alert was initially issued when, for a period from October 1,
1981 through March 31, 1982, 20 of 22 samples (91%) of dried fungus
(mushrooms) from Hong Kong and the Peoples Republic of China (PROC)
were detained for filth. The 20 detentions represented 14
different packers.
At that time, it was reported that the products were repacked
or from the PROC even though the shippers were from Hong Kong
and therefore, both countries were combined.
Review of FY 92 detention data indicated that the filth
problem in these products continues. Of 68 detentions made
in FY 92, which represented 37 manufacturers/shippers from
the two countries, 41 of these shipments or 60%, resulted in
refusals.
INSTRUCTIONS : Automatically detain all shipments of dried fungi and dried
mushrooms for filth from Hong Kong and Peoples Republic of
China, except for those firms listed in the Attachment to
this alert.
PRIORITIZATION
GUIDANCE : No purging is required.
