Research Project: Nat'l Inventory Devel. and Assess, of Soil-Atmos Pheric Exchg of N20,nox & Ch4 Oxid. in Us Ag Soils

Location: Fort Collins Soil Plant Nutrient Research (SPNR)

Project Number: 5402-11000-006-16
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Jan 01, 2002
End Date: Dec 31, 2004

Objective:
The objectives are to facilitate the development of a model and improved methodologies to more readily produce annual (1990-2002 and beyond) agricultural soil N2O (provided by sub-source: direct emissions from managed soils, direct emissions from pasture/range/paddock, and Indirect Emissions), NOx and CH4 emission/uptake estimates for the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks 1990-2002, and improved N2O emission factors for use w/the IPCC Agricultural Soils N2O estimation methodology.

Approach:
The work to be conducted provide EPA with a tool to develop the agricultural soil management N2O, NOx and CH4 emission/uptake estimates, and test mitigation scenarios; the supporting documentation for inclusion in the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks 1990-2002; and improved N2O emission factors for use with the IPCC Agricultural Soils N2O estimation methodology. The daily CENTURY ecosystem model DAYCENT will be used to estimate N2O, NOx and CH4 emission/uptake emissions from agricultural systems first on state or regional scales and them to the national scale. Estimates of emissions resulting from fertilizer application to non-agricultural lands will also be made. DAYCENT N2O emission estimates will be compared to emission estimates using the DNDC model in collaboration with Dr. Ray Desjardins, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, using the same data bases for comparison. EPA will be consulted to insure the chosen approaches are suitable and fulfill the information needs for the Inventory.
