Abstract
A new age of scientific exploration--startling in its pace of discovery, its breadth and complexity--is dawning. It holds great potential for transforming our understanding of environmental processes and providing new tools to address environmental problems. The integration of environmental research and education, at all levels, and collaboration across diverse communities will be vital to designing sophisticated and effective solutions that will move us toward an environmentally sound future.
