Miniature Mass Spectrometers: Error-free Chemical Sensing
Purdue University
Griffin Analytical Technologies, Inc.,

Miniature mass spectrometers of three generations will be shown:

  1. A laboratory prototype
  2. A commercial system
  3. Components of a next-generation hand-held system

These instruments are used for air and water analysis for particular chemical compounds present at ultra-trace levels with high specificity. Chemical detection by a highly specific, rapid and sensitive method is an essential need in modern society. Mass spectrometry is the gold standard method of chemical detection, speciation and quantization.

Next-Generation Chemical Vapor Sensors
Next Dimension Technologies
Pasadena, CA

Next Dimension Technologies is developing and commercializing a new generation of array-based vapor sensors for use in chemical weapons detection. Based on recent discoveries in nanocomposite materials at the California Institute of Technology, the sensors offer unsurpassed sensitivity and rapid responsiveness to a large number of chemical agents. With their low power consumption, miniature profiles, and

limited data processing requirements, the sensors provide an ideal solution for portable battlefield detection devices and stationary monitoring equipment. The sensors are easily manufactured using cost-effective printing techniques.

Wireless Sensor Networks for Emergency Medical Care
Boston University
Harvard University
10 Blade, Inc.

This exhibit explores applications of wireless sensor network technology to pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency care. Recent advances in embedded computing systems have led to the emergence of wireless sensor networks, consisting of small, battery-powered "motes" with limited computation and radio communication capabilities. This technology has the potential to impact the delivery and study of resuscitative care by allowing vital signs to be automatically collected and fully integrated into the patient care record and used for real-time triage, correlation with hospital records, and long-term observation.
