Why are bubbles round? Bubbles always form in the shape with the smallest surface area. That shape is—round! But it IS possible to make a square bubble.

Here’s how: Use pipe cleaners to make three-dimensional bubble wands. Try making a cube. Start by making two squares and then attach them together at the corners. Make a handle by attaching a long piece of pipe cleaner to the cube. Then dunk the cube into a deep container of bubble liquid and pull it out carefully. You should see a cube-shaped bubble in the middle of your cube-shaped wand.

How is this possible? While a sphere is the minimum surface area for a free bubble, a cube is the minimum surface for a bubble formed inside a cube. For more bubble fun, try building and dunking a pyramid-shaped bubble wand.
