What software is required?
You don't need special software to use most of nationalatlas.gov. Our Map Maker probably works in the Web browser you're using to read this page.

The Map Maker uses HTML 3.0 with cascading style sheets, Active Server Pages, and Javascript 1.2 (not Java). Windows users should use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 7. Macintosh users should use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or Netscape 7.  If the Map Maker fails to load completely and you are using Internet Explorer on Macintosh Operating System 9, try increasing the memory allotted to Internet Explorer.  No other browsers are supported at this time, though we are interested in hearing about your experience using the Map Maker with other browsers.

You will need a Shockwave plug-in from Macromedia in order to use our multimedia maps. Chances are good that this plug-in came with your browser. If not, you can follow this link to download Shockwave.

We're aware that Shockwave is not available for all operating systems. We regret that we cannot support all systems and all browsers.

What hardware is required?
You need a modern computer with a connection to the Internet. The screen resolution of your monitor should be set to 800- by 600-pixels or higher.
