Expanded Services Available to Eligible Food and Nutrition Patrons

Through an interagency agreement with the Food and Nutrition Service of USDA and the University of Maryland, the National Agricultural Library (NAL) has expanded the categories of users eligible for direct loan of books and audiovisuals, free photocopies of journal articles, and comprehensive reference/research services. The expanded group includes personnel working directly with the following programs:

USDA employees working under these programs are eligible for the full range of services described in the information sheet Services Available to USDA Employees, and should consult that page for document delivery guidelines. Individuals not affiliated with one of the above groups or not employed by USDA should submit document delivery requests through a local library using interlibrary loan, and should review Services Available to Individuals for information.

How to request materials

Requests may be submitted via:

Please note:

Copies

A single copy may be provided, in lieu of loan, from materials in the NAL collection provided the request does not fall outside of copyright restrictions and making such reproductions would not cause damage to the original.
Delivery information. NAL's turnaround time for processing copy requests is 2 business days from receipt of request. There is a limit of 50 pages (30 pages if the item is sent electronically) for each item requested. See Delivery Options for information on delivery methods for copies.

Loans

Loan period. The standard loan period for NAL materials is 28 days.
Renewing loans. Eligible food and nutrition program staff can renew materials one time. Borrowers are responsible for returning (or renewing) materials promptly. To request a renewal, call (301)504-5798 or email us.
Returning loans. Return materials to the following address:

Audiovisuals

NAL does not offer advance booking services for audiovisuals. The standard loan period for most audiovisual materials is 28 days (limited to North America). NAL recommends submitting requests 1-2 weeks ahead of time if you want to obtain audiovisual materials for a specific show date.

Non-circulating materials

The following materials are non-circulating:

  • Serials (except for USDA serials)
  • Rare, reference, and reserve books
  • Maps
  • Microfilm and microfiche
  • Proceedings of conferences or symposia.

Although these materials may not be borrowed, requests may be filled in the form of a microform or paper copy provided the request does not fall outside of copyright restrictions and making such reproductions would not cause damage to the original. Please indicate on your request if a copy of the material is acceptable in place of a loan. You may also request a copy of the table of contents in order to request specific chapters or sections at a later date.
