A resource for Sanitarians, Environmental Health Specialists, Environmental Health Officers, Students and other Public Health professionals. This information is available to anyone in the public interested in the field of Environmental Health and reducing illness and death due to environmentally-related disease and injury.

  Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute
On October 04, 2004, the NCEH/EEHS/Environmental Health Services Branch in collaboration with the Louisville Metro Health Department, Louisville, KY, held an orientation session for CDC’s new Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute, in Louisville, KY. Applicants to the program were invited to Louisville to participate in a discussion on the need for leadership in environmental public health and to submit their application for this new leadership development program. Following the one day program overview, interview, and problem-solving session applicants participated in a four day community based emergency response training program. The first session of the Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute is scheduled for the Spring of 2005.
A second cycle of candidates will be considered for admittance into the program in January 2005. Additional information is available from Capt John Sarisky at JSarisky@cdc.gov

  “A Systems-based Food Safety Evaluation: An Experimental Approach” acrobat logo
by Capt.’s Chuck Higgins and Barry Hartfield, USPHS, NPS – Public Health Program, was published in the November edition of the NEHA Journal of Environmental Health. The development of the environmental health system approach used in this study is acknowledged to have come from work done by CAPT Higgins in collaboration with other branch members during his assignment at CDC’s Environmental Health Services Branch.
 
  Beliefs about Sources of Gastrointestinal Illness acrobat logo
An EHS-Net poster on “What Factors are Associated with People’s Beliefs that a Meal Eaten Outside of the Home Made Them Sick?” was presented at the IAFP meeting in Phoenix, AZ, August, 2004.
 
  EHS-Net Program Announcement
A new EHS-Net program announcement has been published in the Federal Register.  The appendices may be found on the EHSB website. 

 
 

New Capacity Building Partnerships
EHSB has initiated new capacity building partnerships with five institutions to form regional environmental public health academic centers and nine environmental public health programs.

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists have adopted a position paper requesting CDC to develop a national strategic plan to address the prevention and control of recreational water illnesses.
 

 

Environmental Health’s Role in Preparedness acrobat logo
The NEHA’s September Journal of Environmental Health features an excellent article on how Environmental Health programs have expanded to include preparedness in their communities.  It features a number of interviews with professionals from across the United States including Environmental Health Services Branch staff.
 
 

  MMWR  An Outbreak of Norovirus Gastroenteritis at a Swimming Club Vermont, 2004
This report summarizes the results of a successful Environmental Health Systems Approach investigation conducted by VDH and CDC.  The findings underscore the importance of correct pool maintenance for rapid identification of water-quality problems to prevent outbreaks of swimming pool--associated illness.
 

"A Strategy to Revitalize Health Services in the United States" acrobat logo
