A Pollution Prevention
Project Report to: The United State Environmental Protection Agency On
the topic of Recycling of Two-Stroke Marine Engines
The EPA targeted two-stroke marine engines as engines that produce more
pollution than four-stroke engines. Consequently, the EPA is interested
in the replacement of these engines with four-stroke engines as quickly
as possible in order to have the maximum environmental benefit.
Peconic Bay Esturary and Nutrient
Over-Enrichment
Fortunately, about 97% of the Peconic Estuary is meeting environmental
standards and guidelines with respect to dissolved oxygen and nitrogen.
However, due to poor tidal flushing and high nitrogen inputs, the environmentally
sensitive western estuary is critically stressed. Studies and monitoring
suggest that nitrogen stresses may exist in Great Peconic Bay and Little
Peconic Bay and numerous tidal creeks along the Estuary.
