Initiatives & Projects


Environmental Health Workgroup Initiatives:

In 1996, in support of the five objectives, the workgroup identified seven discreet initiatives of mutual importance. These initiatives were agreed upon with full participation from state environmental and health partners. The initiatives fit within the workgroup's four progrommatic areas of Research,Communication, Training, and Surveillance and include:

  1. Pesticide Exposure and Health Effects on Children
  2. Pediatric Lead (Pb) Exposure Identification and Risk Reduction
  3. Neural Tube Defects Assessment
  4. Advanced Training
  5. Health Alerts and Communication
  6. Toxicology Center Development
  7. Geographic Information Systems


Other Environmental Health Workgroup Projects:

In addition to the seven original initiatives, additional projects have been developed to further define the program needs.Current projects include:

  1. Texas Neural Tube Defect Project
  2. NHEXAS Arizona Border Project
  3. El Paso Children's Respiratory Health Study
  4. Air Pollution and Health Effects Surveillance System in Ciudad Juarez
  5. Environmental Health Training for Health Professionals
  6. US-Mexico Asthma Surveillance Demonstration Projects
  7. Investigation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Nogales, Arizona
  8. Pediatric Asthma and Air Quality in the Paso del Norte, Executive summary
  9. Household Pesticide Survey, Executive summary
  10. Evaluation of the Hispanic HANES Database
  11. Lower Rio Grande Valley Transboundry Air Pollution Project
  12. Texas Border Health Survey
  13. Pilot Study to Identify an Approach to Measure Neurobehavioral Effects of Pesticides in Children
