Research Project: Evaluation and Management of Phosphorus in the Town Brook Watershed: Bmp Implementation and Evaluation

Location: Pasture Systems & Watershed Management Research

Project Number: 1902-13000-009-04
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Mar 01, 2003
End Date: Mar 31, 2005

Objective:
Develop, implement, and evaluate selected best management practices (BMP) for minimizing phosphorus (P) loss from farming operations typified by those of the Town Brook Watershed in the Catskill region in New York State, while maintaining sustainability and economic viability of the farms.

Approach:
Apply a coordinated research effort involving sampling and experimentation at plot, field, farm, and watershed scales, in combination with mathematical modeling, to: evaluate P balances at multiple scales, examine watershed-scale P transport processes, evaluate efficiencies of BMPs directly as well as develop a BMP database, and initiate formulation of mathematical models to quantify P loss reductions resulting from large-scale BMP application.
