Pacific Islands Contact Office (PICO)

Waimea Beach, HawaiiEPA ’s Pacific Islands Contact Office (PICO) in Honolulu helps the public in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands to access EPA's extensive environmental information resources.

Located at the crossroads of the Pacific, PICO serves as a contact point and liaison between EPA and the State of Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. PICO also serves as a home base for visiting EPA staff and environmental officials of the Pacific Islands during temporary duty in Hawaii. PICO handles the logistics of EPA-sponsored meetings, conferences, hearings, workshops and training seminars held in Hawaii.

PICO helps connect the Hawaii news media with EPA staff in Pacific Southwest Regional Office in San Francisco, California, and EPA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. PICO also helps reporters by providing background information for environmental news stories.

The PICO staff conduct outreach to Hawaii schools, colleges and community groups and participate in environmental events. Teacher information packets with environmental lesson materials are available. PICO staff also speak at schools (all grade levels) and environmental events.

PICO:

  • serves the public, state and local agencies, businesses, and groups interested in the environment, environmental health issues and federal regulations.
  • provides materials to the general public; federal, State of Hawaii, and county government agencies; elected officials; and environmental groups.
  • Maintains a library and environmental information files
  • Serves as a repository for documents involving any EPA Pacific Area hearing or meeting announced with a public notice

PICO provides:

  • assistance in communicating the Islands' unique perspective to EPA decision makers in the Regional and Headquarters offices
  • information on state and local government environmental programs and activities in Hawaii
  • logistical support for EPA staff on temporary duty in Hawaii and for EPA meetings
  • speeches and presentations to schools, communities and interested groups
  • environmental education materials
