Carters Lake Drums Site, Oakman, GA
Storm activity generated by Hurricane Ivan caused flooding in the
mountains of North Georgia, Eastern Tennessee, and Western North Carolina. Carters Lake is
located in North Georgia. The flood waters washed acres of debris (including whole trees,
limbs, furniture, appliances, tires, trash, and numerous hazardous materials containers) into the
lake. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Carters Project Office notified EPA and GA
EPD of the hazardous materials and requested assistance to collect and properly dispose of the
fugitive containers.
