Programs

The United States Environmental Protection Agency protects public health and the environment in Region 2 through a number of distinct offices and programs:

Air – For information on air pollution, clean air, and air quality, consult this web area. The Air and Radiation program deals with preventing air pollution, indoor and outdoor air quality, industrial air pollution, pollution from vehicles and engines, acid rain, stratospheric ozone depletion, and radon and radiation protection.

Compliance – If you or your organization need help in complying with federal environmental rules and regulations, explore this web area. Through the Compliance Assistance and Pollution Prevention program, EPA assists business and industry, farms, federal facilities, academic institutions, and other organizations in understanding and complying with EPA regulations. This web area also offers valuable information on pollution prevention, environmental management systems, and "best practices."

Cross-program Activities

Grants – Interested in applying for an environmental grant in Region 2? The Environmental Protection Grants web area posts a wide range of EPA and other federal grant opportunities, along with a Grant Application Kit, a tutorial on grant-writing and information for grant recipients.

Pesticides – Pesticides, which are substances designed to destroy animals, insects, weeds, and other pests, can also pose risks to human health and the environment. Consult this web area to learn how EPA regulates pesticides and to obtain information on legal and illegal pesticides, food safety, and the proper disposal of unwanted pesticides.

Superfund – The Superfund program locates, investigates, and cleans up hazardous waste sites. It also responds to and assists in the cleanup of emergency spills. Of the Region's 243 Superfund sites and 3 proposed sites, 97 sites (39.4%) have been cleaned up and deleted from the National Priorities List or have all construction completed and are undergoing long-term remediation. Long-term remedies usually mean that continued pumping of contaminated ground water is required. Visit this web area to access Region 2 site fact sheets, review laws and regulations, learn about the listing and cleanup processes, and review Superfund figures.

Waste – Solid waste (garbage), hazardous waste, and underground storage tanks are all dealt with under EPA's Waste program. This web area provides information about the proper operation of solid waste landfills, underground storage tank systems, the clean-up of hazardous waste sites outside of Superfund, and safe operation of facilities that generate, treat, store, or dispose of hazardous waste. You may also review waste laws and regulations.

Water – EPA administers a number of federal laws that protect water, including the Clean Water Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act. Consult this web area for information on a wide range of water issues, including drinking water safety; freshwater, ocean, and groundwater protection; wastewater management; dredging; watershed management; non-point pollution; and wetlands protection.
